About Me
My name is Gabriel Cannon, I live in Dublin (Ireland) and have had an interest in Sheela na Gig since I was so high, come to think of it I’m not that much taller now! Anyway, I used to travel up and down the country with various groups i.e. Scouts, Cavers, Rock Climbers, Geologists, Alcholics and the odd normal person, in search of….oops, I can’t remember, it’s been so long since I started looking, and I’m not going to quote U2, so there!
I knew of the Killinaboy sheela from my caving trips to Clare and of course Bunratty just down the road, and that, I thought, was all there was to see.
The next stage was finding Jack Roberts and Joanne Mc Mahon’s book, The Sheela-na-Gigs of Britain & Ireland in 1997. Well, Moses coming down from the mountain could not have been more revealing than this! It opened up a whole new area of my country that I had been totally ignorant of. And the rest as they say, is history.
The downside of all of this is that it has created a weekend widow of my wife Ann, who, although she now accompanies me, still cannot understand what I see in these *** ****.
I think it’s called “the other woman syndrome”. Get down Shep!
I am now retired from my job in the lecky company and intend spending more time updating this website and re-visiting the sheelas all over Ireland. How sad does that sound!!
A big Thank You to my Son, Kevin for setting up this website for me, it’s very useful to have an IT graduate on hand for this sort of thing. I suppose I’ll have to increase his pocket money now!
