Download Putty Here

The best way to access RedBrick is to use a program called "PuTTY". Putty is already on almost all of the machines in DCU, so see the bottom of this page if you want to know how to quickly access it. Otherwise, here's 3 simple steps; if you have any problems at all, please give our helpdesk a shout at helpdesk@redbrick.dcu.ie

  • Click on the "PuTTY" link above.
  • A box should come up asking what you want to do - select the option to "open the program from its current location"
  • This should bring up the screen below. Simply click on the "RedBrick" button (or type login.redbrick.dcu.ie into the "Host Name" bit. You'll be asked for your RedBrick username and password. Enter those, and that should be it!

On a Mac?

OSX You can use the terminal (found in Applications » Utilities » Terminal). Go to System Preferences » Sharing Icon and make sure the Remote Login Option is turned on and the Firewall is turned off.

Once that is all done , open the terminal and type ssh username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie.

Command Line SSH: (Linux/Unix/MacOSX)

Open up a terminal window, and type ssh -l username login.redbrick.dcu.ie with "username" being the login name given to you on registration day.

Quick DCU login guide:

Computers run by CSD (DCU Computer Services Dept.):

Library, X-building, Henry Grattan, Business School, Communications. Click on the start menu. Next click "Run", and type in X:\putty.exe. Put in your username and password, and you're in..(You can also do the above).

Computer Applications (CA)

Click on the start menu. Next click "Programs", "Tools & Utilities", "Telnet & FTP", "Putty & PSCP 0.51beta" and finally "Telnet & SSH Client". This will run Putty! Under "Host name", type in redbrick, tick the "SSH" circle and click on "open". Simply type in your username and password, and you're in! For handiness sake though, you may want to download Putty from above and save it to your H:\ drive. From then on, you can just run putty straight from your H:\ drive rather than going through all those annoying menus!

Electronic Engineering (EE)

PuTTY isn't available on EE servers by default, but you can put it in C:\temp on all the Windows machines, or alternatively store it on your H: drive and run it from there. If you're on thorung, you can ssh directly to Redbrick using ssh username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie with "username" being the login name given to you on registration day.
