Fore Abbey

Fore Abbey, Co. Westmeath

In St. Fechin’s Church (the one opposite and closest to the car park) and situated about halfway up an inner arch you will find this sheela-like figure.
This was brought to my attention by Emma Fitzsimons and on first appearance looked like a sheela, however closer inspection revealed that it was a seated figure with the folds in the lower part of the habit and also shows the rope belt that monks used.
So no gold ring here even though the site is Benedictine and they were normally devoid of any ornamentation.
